On 1 October 2007, the Australian Government introduced a test to determine Australian citizenship for the first. It means people must pass the test to apply for citizenship.

\pass the test to apply for citizenship.
The Australian citizens test format consists of 20 multiple-choice question to be answered within 45 minutes.

Based on the resource Australian Citizenship Our Common Bond, this test covers an array of information about Australia and Australian citizenship. The test encourages individuals to become more familiar with their country, and learn about its responsibilities and benefits.

For the Citizenship Test, all the questions come from the section that is testable in the Resource Book.

UPDATE The Australian Government wants to create a brand new Australian citizenship test. The new citizenship test is still based on the “Australian Citizenship, Our Common Bond” study guide but also includes new questions that will assess the candidate’s commitment and understanding to Australian values.

Also, in the previous system, citizenship requests were denied if a person was found guilty of committing a grave crime. Now, the government considers this insufficient. The new test looks at the history of all offenses, minor or not, that do not meet the Australian standard values such as welfare abusing.

These new questions may include, for instance, questions about religious freedom or gender equality. These new questions cover topics like violence against women, children and their families, female genital-mutilation or forced marriage.

The following are some “Australian value” questions to consider:

Under what conditions is it acceptable to deny girls education?

Is it permissible for parents to make their children marry?

Under what circumstances can female genitals be cut in Australia?

While it’s illegal to hit your spouse out in public, can you do so in private?

Cost of the citizenship test will be covered by your application fee. You will not have to pay again if you need to retake the test.

According to new proposed regulations (subjected to passage of legislation), after three failures at the citizenship test, an applicant is required to wait for two years before taking the test again. (The current system allows the applicant to retake this test as often as they wish).

Also, those who cheat in their tests will be denied citizenship.

You will need to learn a great deal of information from the resource book Australian Citizenship – Our Common Bond. The computer-based, multiple-choice format is also a bit disconcerting for those who aren’t used to it. For more information, click HERE.
