Australian Citizenship Test Criteria
You must already be an Australian permanent resident and have completed the citizenship application process in order to sit for this test. The test forms part of the citizenship application.
If you have applied for Australian Citizenship and are eligible to take the test for citizenship, you’ll receive an email or letter confirming your eligibility. This will include all of the details you need about the test including the test centre, test date, documentation required on test day, etc.
The cost of the Australian Citizenship Test
You do not have to pay extra for the citizenship test. Your general application for citizenship includes the test fee. The test fee is included in your general citizenship application.
The format of the Australian Citizenship Test
This test involves 20 multiple-choice questions. Each question has 3 answers, and you will need to choose which one you believe is the correct answer. You will only be able to take the test in English. Therefore, you must have a good understanding of English. Passing the test requires a score of 75%. This means you must answer 15 correctly.
The Standard Test is a computer-based test (see exceptions here). It has a 45 minute time limit. You can get help with a computer during the test if you’re not comfortable with using it.

Test questions are taken from the section of the book Australian Citizenship : Our Common Bond that is testable. This testable section contains all the facts you need to know. You never know which of these questions will appear in your exam.
Update: Australia’s government is planning to introduce a new test of citizenship. This new test, which is subject to legislation being passed, will include questions taken from “Australian Citizenship – Our Common Bond”, as well as new questions regarding the applicants’ understanding and commitment to Australian Values.
New questions could test migrants’ views on gender equality, religious freedom and other issues. New questions include topics such as female genital cutting, violence against children and women, and forced marriage.
Australian citizenship test rules
You cannot use the reference book or other materials during the exam.
The only person you will be allowed to talk to is the administrator of the test.
The computer will tell you whether you passed the test or not. The test can be taken again the next day, if possible.
Your test results will automatically be transferred into your application for citizenship if you pass the Australian Citizenship test. The overall outcome of your citizenship process will be the result you wait on.
